Mr. Red in the Snow (Hummingbird)

A hummingbird at a feeder in the snow.

Photo Description
This picture today (2-21-19) is of Mr. Red the hummingbird in the backyard eating at his feeder, but it isn't the clearest picture, I just wanted to share it, and snow in Las Vegas is so rare. It's fun watching the hummingbirds have so much fun in it. They've never seen or been in it before, so it's quite a treat for them. They're all flying really fluttery enjoying the feel of it too. They're hovering in it, and swooping low to the ground to check it all out and really having a fun time letting the feathery light snow land on them. Mr. Red has some little snowballs on his face too, hehe

He is adorable - looks like a snowflake makes a snowball for him.
There is just nothing quite like having a creature like this up close.
That's when they get a standing "ovation" from me!
Thanks for sharing Mr. Red with us.
Betty

Hi Betty,

You're so right, a snowflake sure does seem like snowballs for him :)

These little guys are just so cute I can't get enough of them either.

I'm so happy to share them, and thank you.

I uploaded the short video of this picture from which it came from.

I'd taken a "still" out of the video to show how they really don't mind the snow at all, which I never knew that until we got snow in Feb.

I wish I could explain how they fluttered in one spot in the air, just to allow those snow flakes to land on them, they reminded me of all the animals playing in the snow in any manner they each were able to do that. They all just loved it.

I was so worried they'd all freeze that night, the wind was blowing hard, and the snow came down non stop between 6"-8" deep.

The hummers, like a lot of mammals I've read about, go into a Torpor to preserve their body heat, which a Torpor is the state just before hibernation, but they don't reach hibernation - yet, they can sure maintain at very cold temps during the long night. I read 7 degrees was the max they can tolerate.

Here's the ( 10 ) second video of Mr Red "live in the snow" drinking at his feeder. It's where the picture came from (this video) I'd taken.
