My 14 Year Old Pit Died Suddenly?

Yesterday morning my dad told me that our 14 year old Pit Bull Elsie vomited. I went to clean it up and saw that she had pooped as well. There was more vomit than I'd seen before and she seemed exhausted. I cleaned it all up and petted her. She looked at me, but didn't want to move. I noticed she had a small amount of white foam on her mouth and decided to call the vet. They said I could bring her in 20 minutes. I put my clothes on, got the car ready and went to get her. Only 20 + minutes had passed and I found her now lifeless. She was totally normal the day before, ate well, drank well, and we went for our normal walk. She didn't show any signs of anything wrong and it's driving me crazy not having a clue about what could have happened.

So sorry about your dog. The foaming at the mouth could indicate poisoning. You may need to get an autopsy done on her to be sure.

You have my deepest sympathy on the loss of your pup. So sad. For larger dogs 14 years is a good long life, although I know from losing my fur baby at 17 and 1/2 that no matter how old or how young, they are never with us long enough because we want them "furever".

It could have been anything. Was she outside alone where she could have eaten something she shouldn't have or had a bee/wasp sting? Was there a food left out she could have eaten, like chocolate? Was she in the garage where she could have gotten into antifreeze? Did she have a heart condition? Had she had a health issue within the last year or so?

If nothing was out of the ordinary, it is possible she just passed from natural causes (they often vomit, poop and pee before and as they pass).

Your vet may be able to give you some insights based on her history. Sadly, like with some humans who pass unexpectedly, you may never know.

Do keep in mind what you do know...that you loved her, she loved you, and that you gave her a wonderful life. May her memory always be a blessing!

If you have trouble getting over your grief, do not hesitate to seek counseling or a group to talk to. Our animal shelter has grief counseling for pet parents/families to gather monthly to share their stories.

Blessings and prayers!
