My cat has scratched the fur off under his ear and he will not stop scratching it. How do we stop him from scratching the area so it will heal? We have put vaseline on it. It worked for awhile but once it wore off, he would start to scratch it again and reopen the area.
Your cat may have ear mites and if so, he cannot stop scratching because it bothers him too much.
Generally, you can see mite infection in a cat's ears as it may look black but do not count on being observant as ear mites can be very dangerous to his health if not taken care of in a timely manner.
No matter the problem he probably needs to see his vet for a correct diagnosis and proper medication.
Although it could be a serious problem, If a vet visit is not possible immediately, I would suggest you take him to PetSmart and see if their vet tech can offer help and suggestions. They are usually very helpful.
Some counties have a vet at their Humane Society so maybe try there also.
This is very important so please do not put it off.
You can always try self medicating first but if it does not work then please take him to a vet.
"How do you get rid of ear mites in cats at home?
One of the natural ways to kill ear mites is to prepare a simple spray solution containing 50/50 of water and apple cider vinegar. Use the spray at least twice every day for a week inside and around your cat's ears to cover all the infected areas."
He may have an infection or mites. I would take him to the vet if I were you.
Possible problems: tick, fleas, insect bite or sting, ringworm, a thorn or pricker in/under the skin, poison ivy or other "itchy" plant, a fly larva under the skin, heat rash. It really should be diagnosed by the vet, as continued scratching can cause a wound that will get infected.
This could be mites, or even allergies, Only a vet can tell you for sure. www.justanswer.com/
