The needle on my Singer 5522 will not go up and down. How can I fix it?

Oil the place where the needle goes in. You may have to remove the machine cover to do this. Also remove the needle plate and clean around the bobbin.
Normally this is due to the belt or even a problem with the wheel not locking in place to allow the needle to move up or down on the machine.
Can you turn the wheel and does the needle move? If not there is a blockage in the belt or something is in the area of the needle arm that is blocking it so it can not move freely. In order to fix this, the machine needs to be taken apart and you need to check this area and also the area around the wheel to see what is blocking this and not allowing it to trun freely.
