New Home Sewing Machine Will Not Sew?

I have a New Home 532 sewing machine from 1963 and it has been the best sewing machine for me. I had it serviced about 10 years ago, but it might need it again. I cannot get it to sew. The light is on, but it seems that the machine is not getting any power to the sewing mechanics.

Referring to the owner's manual, clean and oil all the moving parts of the machine. As a machine sits unused for a long time, the moving parts seem to "gum up" and not move like they should. Cleaning out all lint, loose thread, etc, AND re-oiling should do wonders for getting your machine back to working order. Also make sure the foot pedal cord is undamaged and fully plugged in. Check the drive belt too, making sure it's in good shape, make sure there aren't threads under the belt making it slip. One more thing....is the hand wheel/bobbin winder engaged for sewing?

If these suggestions don't help, I think you will have have it serviced. Good luck and let us know how things go.

If it has been a long time since you used it then most likely it does need a good cleaning even if it has other problems.
If the last cleaning was 10 years ago it would seem this would be a good time to have it done again.

It is usually recommended to unplug all cords from socket and foot control - wait about 5-10 minutes and then reconnect everything to see if it has reset.
I usually ask my questions on the following forum as they usually know what questions to ask and can lead you through any problems. Join and I think you will be pleased with the results.

What did work for my machine was to unplug all the cords from the machine and from the outlets. Let it sit for some time, I can't remember for how long, but maybe two hours or overnight. Plugging all the cords back in to the machine and the outlet worked. The light would come on, but pressing on the pedal wouldn't make it sew. It would be worth a try.

Check the wire from the foot pedal to the machine. It may need to be repaired or replaced. Older machines are worth fixing, as they are made with metal parts as opposed to plastic ones.

That is the best machine ever! This machine is over 50 years old, and was serviced , 10 years ago before any problems . It sounds like it needs a sewing machine tune up.

This machine has owned up to it's brand, and would be worth it to get serviced .
