The tears from slicing onions can be so annoying. These tears are caused by releasing the gasses from the onion when it is cut and them making their way up to your eyes. Stop these gasses in their tracks just by sprinkling a bit of salt on your onion before chopping away. The salt dissolves the sulphur in the vapors. It also helps to use a sharp knife on a refrigerated onion, as less of the irritating enzymes will be released into the air. Happy chopping!

Absolutely trying this one! Sounds easy too!
I wear a pair of safety goggles that I bought when doing drilling and grinding and I wear these when chopping onions. A pair of swimming goggles would work just as well. Maybe you have some around the house ;-)
Putting them in fridge for a few hours before cutting them up makes most of the tears away.
Although I have read and am constantly being told that you shouldn't refrigerate onions, I agree with you. I have been doing it for the past 50 years as did my mother before me.
