My Bichon is 14 years old and recently had a bladder infection. We have been to vets and after antibiotics we went back and the vet said her urine is perfect and they said she is so healthy for her age. Now my dog has to wear diapers at night and she is drinking a lot more water. Is it because of age and her bladder has become weaker? I hate to call the vet again. The bladder infection visit was 300.00 dollars.
Thank you.

The vet should answer questions related to the care you paid for without charge. I would ask. It could be a secondary infection or diabetes or nothing. If the vet wants to see her, ask if they can do a sliding scale or extended payment plan.
If she gets a clean bill of health and it is just aging, then you will have some piece of mind in the matter.
Our Doxie was about 14 12 when she started wearing diapers. She lived to 17 12 and "diapie" time became part of the routine until the day she crossed the rainbow bridge.
We used human baby diapers from Walmart. She was tiny and wore a baby 1 size. We just cut a diamond for her tail and all was good.
Unlike dog diapers, human ones absorb better, don't leak and keep the pup dry. They are much cheaper than dog ones.
I will send up lots of prayers for you and your pup!
Incontinence is an effect of aging. The thirst could be a skin of diabetes. I would call the vet again.
You didn't say if they actually checked for diabetes. If not, ask them to check. In some cities, the local animal shelter has a reasonable veterinary clinic; see if your city has that.
I raise Bichon Frise and I had one a few years back that had the same problems as yours. It was an older dog and ended up with a bladder infection. The medication that they gave her was fantastic and it did take care of the problem. But she was on the medication for 15 days.
I think this might have been a bit too long and in the end, they finally said she had diabetes. I did so much searching online for diabetes in animals it wasn't even funny. I did find out that animals can get this the same as humans.
They wanted to put my dog on medication or they said that I'd need to change the dog's diet. I had already been feeding the dog the same types of food they recommend for an animal that has diabetes.
For 6 months I pampered my dog and did all I could for her, but she started to have other problems and I finally put her to sleep because I just felt so sorry for her.
I know this is hard to take and it is not really what you want to hear. I fear that you'll need to go back to the vet and have a blood test taken to make sure there are no other signs of an infection or even diabetes in your dog.
when you have elderly dog with kidney problems will exhibit this behaviour, especially after the recent health problem which taxed her system. Maybe soon it will go away
You do need to check for diabetes. There are different types of diabetes in dogs and cats and they require different treatment so it is a question for your Vet. Most are easy to treat. The incontinence may be related or not. And it may clear up with treatment or not.
