I have just taken over my mother's dog as she is in care. We have had him for a bit. He is 15 and I thought it would be a problem, however he appears very settled and happy and we love him. He is staying at my daughter's place and she has a 2 year old female. They get on fine, however three days into stay he has started standing and deliberately weeing in his own bed. Is this some sort of territorial thing? He has done it three days in a row. I would like to understand why and get him to stop.

This is because of the change in his life. He was with your mom for so long. He misses her and that is one way of showing he is sad and misses your mom. Dogs also have feeling and they tend to show it in different ways.
Hopefully as time goes on he will stop this problem. Until he does your daughter will have to keep a close eye on him and make sure she gets him outside more often go to pee.
This type of behavior is typical for a dog that has lost his mom or his best friend. If there was two dogs in the home and one died the other one feels the loss.
Tell your daughter to give the dog a lot of love and to remove the bed for right now. I would suggest having the dog sleep in a place that has tile and would be easy to clean until he make the adjustment and realizes that your mom is not coming back.
I read a story the other day where a person abandoned a dog at the airport. The dog searched for 2 months for his owner. He refused to eat or even drink and finally died from loneliness. It is sad when a dog gets attached to a person and the person is no longer there. Each animals has a different way to show that they miss this person.
A 15 year old dog is old, and may develop incontinence issues. Call the vet for a checkup.
Hi Judy thanks. The thing is he has never done it at my place where he has stayed most of the time since we got him from Mum. We are just away for a few days. Even at my daughters he takes himself out thru doggy door.
Our senior dog started having accidents as well. Wasnt even aware of it. Vet gave him some antidepressant to help him stay focused but it didnt work for him. I bought reusable doggie diapers from amazon. No more problems.
Thanks will give them a try
Older dog peeing in his bed.`
Step 1
First wash the bed really well so as not to encourage him to keep doing it.
Step 2
The female probably is making him mark his territory.
Step 3
He may also have a bladder infection take him to a vet.
Step 4
Make sure you keep him on a strict routine of walking him 10 minutes after he wakes an about every 2 hours after that.
Step 5
If you catch him let him know it is bad.
Step 6
He needs time to adjust to his new living situation plus he is an older dog.
