I bought an Oster 5834 bread machine at a garage sale. It had never been used the kneading blade was still wrapped in plastic on the cord. I tried making bread and during the kneading process the bread pan gets knocked out of place and the blade stops spinning. If I hold the pan in place it is still difficult and keeps throwing itself out of place. Is there any way to fix this so the pan stays in place?

It is a defective machine. I would contact the company. If they cant help, it will be cheaper to get another one than to fix this one.
make sure the bread bucket SNAPS into place--mine, i don't know the model # has a designated left side on the bucket which must go on the left side of the machine and you must make sure everything is lined up and it SNAPS into place--just now,the bucket refuses to stay in alignment and the machine is vibrating madly, paddle not moving when the machine shifts into the kneading mode--will work fine for the basic mixing- etc reset it and it does it again-i have to see if the 2 "clips" of the machine can be puuushed out a little more the same.
