The overhead ceiling fan light will not turn on with the wall switch. If I leave the switch "on" the light will suddenly come on hours later. Is this a fire hazard?

It is always a concern for fire when electrical systems behave strangely and the safest thing to do is hire an electrician to correct the issue.
I have recently worked on a ceiling fan light that was a high end model. It experienced the same problem you described. The fan had a power regulator in the housing for the lighting circuit. In this model of fan, the regulator was not needed. It only served to lengthen the life of the lamps and to bring the light from off to on slowly (1 to 3 seconds) instead of instantly. The power regulator was removed and the fixture works fine.
You can discuss with your electrician whether this type of fix would work with your type of ceiling fan.
I agree with the previous poster. I think you should call in an electrician to check it out.
