This tip is something we do when we are catching a flight home and don't have much time to eat before heading to the airport. Airport food is expensive as we all know, and even more expensive on flights.
My tip: Take a few varying sizes of ziplock baggies to the buffet on the day you leave, and make sandwiches at your table with food from the buffet. You can also pack cookies, croissants, muffins, bagels, etc from the buffet, and don't forget some NAPKINS in a separate ziplock, and wet wipes if they are available. Just zip the bags up and pop them into your purse or carry-on to eat later at the airport when you are waiting (sometimes hours) for your flight to be called. These snacks also help to keep kids occupied and not whining because their tummies are empty.
We also do this on days we are going on excursions, but eat it early if you are in a hot climate. You MUST be careful the food doesn't spoil.

I don't know of ANY airports that will let you bring "outside food", meaning anything from home or eatery, through security. Once inside the airport, you can buy whatever you want and take THAT on the airplane, but airport security makes you toss anything, food or drink, that you didn't buy IN the airport.
According to the TSA, you are allowed to bring food on planes. Here is their guidelines. It specifically says that baby food is allowed.
However, it could be that the TSA agents follow the guidelines too strictly or just make their own determinations based on their training. I haven't flown recently (2014) but I packed snacks for that trip and brought them on the plane. The only issue was a bottle of unopened airport water that was thrown out when I changed planes in South Korea.
Fruit could be an issue if traveling to Hawaii or other protected areas.
