Not "exactly" sure what setting you modified to make your desktop the way you are describing but I may have a solution for you.
Right click on your desktop and select Properties, it may be Graphic Properties. Look for Display Settings, specifically the word Resolution. Yo will see a field for resolution and it will have a number like 1440x900 or 1280x1024. What ever the number is make a note of it so if you want to put things back to how they are you know what the original setting is. Now, making the number bigger will make your screen go smaller. Making the number smaller will make things on the screen (and the screen) look bigger.
From your description of your problem it sounds like you want to make the number bigger. You can play with these setting and not hurt anything. Usually when you make a change to your resolution it will adjust the screen and pop open a window to ask you if you want to keep the settings. There will also be a timer so if you don't say yes or no in the appointed time it will revert back to the original setting.
Display settings can be different for each computer but they pretty much follow the same basic adjustments. The reason for the difference can be your version of Windows or the video card in your laptop/PC.
Another idea you might try, is go up to the toolbar and click on View. In the menu is Zoom; you might be able to change your zoom level there. Also in that menu is Text Size; when you highlight that, there are options for Largest, Larger, Medium, Smaller, Smallest.
Do you have a wheel on your mouse? Hold down your control key and pull the wheel toward you at the same time. If no wheel, hold down your control key and the arrow down key at the same time. Either way, this will make the letters on your monitor adjust to where you want them.
I have an I-Mac. In the lower right hand corner of screen there are diagonal lines (size about a 1/4") - press that and you can control the size of your screen.
Hope this helps.
If you can't get at things on your screen to make an adjustment, try this:
Hold down the ctrl key and roll the scroll button on your mouse toward you.
Press control and keep pressing it while you
scroll up or down to re-size the screen on the monitor.
I just found this out a couple of months ago.
This is the way I fixed that problem on my computer screen. Put your cursor (arrow) and start to tap the "CTRL" button on your keyboard until you get to the desired size.
