My son and daughter-in-law have just purchased a new home and she wants me to help her pick out a paint color, for her kitchen, foyer, and family room. The house presently is in a neutral tan. Her cabinets are a medium brown, and the granite counter tops are a yellow with dark brown spots.
I would like to see a color that when they walk in the foyer there is a grand look about the space, nice and bright. The family room needs a color that is also bright but not dark. What would be some suggestions if we went with warm colors or cool colors? In the family room the fireplace is surrounded with grey stone. I would like to see some shades of light grey or a powder blue. I'm no expert and I need your help.

A pale warm gray works well against a gray stone fireplace. The light gray-blue you mentioned would look great also as would baby blue. So, I would choose a blue to use in the kitchen with the yellow counter top. Blue also looks good with brown. The fire place is a dominating force, so build your colors around that and if it clashes against it, go for another color or shade.
