I have a small full bathroom with the original 1951 yellow ceramic tile that goes half way up the wall. There is black ceramic tile borders around the top and bottom edge of the wall tiles. The floor tiles are the same yellow ceramic tiles as the wall tiles in a criss cross pattern.
I am looking for a paint color that would go well with the yellow and black tiles for the upper half of the walls (other than white, unless that is all that will work). I think I would prefer to leave my ceiling white. Any suggestions? Thanks.

We have the same type of bathroom. Our tile is black and blue/green, with pink small tiles as the flooring. In your case, with yellow and black. I'd use an accent color of a pale aqua. It would keep the look of "retro" and bring in a softer tone.
I'd keep the ceiling a bright white, as well as the floors and any wall space. Perhaps a hanging print, with aqua in it. Or, towels in the pale aqua would work. Good luck. I'm certain it will be fabulous.
Thank you for not being so foolish as to think you needed to "update" your bathroom by removing what you have. I am so tired of seeing that on those so called "home improvement" shows, which I am beginning to see only as a marketing place for the "latest" which will soon be "out of date", too (Stainless and granite?).
Years ago when I had a home with the peach and maroon tiled bathroom, I found a shower curtain - or could be curtains - with a design that featured those colors together beautifully and painted the wall a very pale shade of the peach (in your case yellow or white) and then painted a pattern on the wall.
A paler yellow would look nice with a white ceiling. Any color that complements yellow such as purple - but you should stick with lighter shades as you don't want the color to hit you in the face when walking into the small room. I grew up in Miami beach and all of the bathrooms have this tile. I've had pink, green and blue myself. Always with matching tubs and sinks and toilets. Super cute! I always have used the tile and fixtures as the focal point and played everything else down. Maybe get a funky retro looking shower curtain. Have fun!
I would go with a gold or a darker shade of the yellow ceramic tiles. Keeps the theme going & looks great to your eye
