We have a small home and need advice on what color to paint the walls. Since the home is small, the kitchen and living room connect. So basically we are really trying to get a flow of color throughout the main floor.
The house is rectangular and the kitchen and living room make almost a shape like this "]". There are 4 walls total. One in the kitchen (north short wall), 1 that goes the length of the kitchen and living room (east long wall), 1 in the living room (south short wall), and 1 that is in the living room that leads down to bedrooms, etc. The kitchen has great lighting, living room has poor lighting.
I am really struggling with what color to pick. We have a medium/dark shade of red oak cabinets, black counter top and then a grey/white/black tiled back drop under the cabinets. So what color do I put on these huge walls to lighten them up? Hoping for a base color that can be used multiple places in the house, but then also an accent color? Should we use 1 main color on all the walls, and then 1 wall is an accent colored wall?
I am not knowledgeable in this area though so any input would be great! (Pardon the mess.)

I'd paint all the walls white which will really brighten up your rooms. You can always change the color later. You can get some good ideas by going to a home improvement store.
You've got so many colours and shades, no wonder you're having a tough time! I vote for white on the walls as well as cabinets.
I totally agree! We moved into the terrible brown on the walls and I'm just trying to get rid of it! I love the ideas of white cabinets too!
Thanks for the feedback!
If you are able to paint the cabinets white, I sure would do that. There are a lot of directions to be found on Pinterest.com. I would go with a shade of white for the walls because your rooms are so dark. Maybe you can get a paint chart of white colors (yes white has about 30 shades on the paint charts.
My instinct tells me to pick a shade similar to the lightest shade on your kitchen tile... which in the photo looks to actually be a light grey. I didn't see much bright white in the tile, but it might be the photo. I wouldn't use bright white or you'll end up with a sterile looking room... Choose a fabric pattern with yellow in it, I think, to make the room look sunnier. Yellow goes with grey, but maybe its been over used. I like turquoise with grey and yellow, but its personal. Are you a pink person? orange? robin's egg blue? Be sure to add metalics and maybe even spray paint your cabinet handles to a brushed chrome. whoo hoo... I love the new spray paint in metalics.
And yes, I'm reading you can use silver and gold in the same room. You might want to add a mirror to your decor of one of the adjoining rooms to the kitchen to reflect light from the window since the rooms look so dark. Best of luck and follow your heart. Its only paint.
Hi! For the question about the apartment with the black and grey kitchen tile... I'm sure you've probably gotten your answer, but I thought it would look nice with white walls to match your appliances and the lightest grey in your tile for the ceiling (just a thought) and then add yellow and light to medium turquoise accents as Carol had mentioned.
