I read on a Facebook group I belong to that it is not necessary to purchase sample-sized cans of paint, or to order the peel-and-stick 12 inch x 12 inch sheets. What the poster did was to get several cards with the paint chip colors she wanted and to tape the same color chips together.
The employee of the store (Benjamin Moore paints) told me that he could order 9 inch x 9 inch squares of color for free. I am not sure if other companies do that.
Since my ceiling and trim will be white, my daughter suggested taping white paper to the bottom so that I could see the contrast.
The paint store suggested examining the samples during the day and night and in different rooms. The paint will look different, depending on the conditions. Don't pick a color because it looked good in someone else's home. This helped immensely in picking the color that worked for us.
The photos show the 9 inch x 9 inch squares, and the paint chips taped together.
My store charges around $10 for a can of paint and around $6 for a peel-and-stick square. If you are considering several colors, this will save you a nice sum of money.
