There is yellowing from a leak in the roof. How do I prepare the area before painting?

Try painting the area with shellac. When dry paint. You may want to try a small area first before doing the entire area.
I've never heard of the shellac idea, so can't comment on it. I would recommend putting a coat of Kilz on the area to seal it before painting. That is what I have done before, and it works very well.
I agree with Foxrun. The shellac will do the trick.
There are two kinds of Kilz one is a shellac base and one is water based. You want the shellac based one. Go over the spot with a coat or two then after it dries well, prime with a flat paint then the color of choice. My husband and I had a handyman business and that is the way we did it and it worked every time. The shellac base Kilz seals the stain, the flat paint primes it so you don't see the mend through the final coat and the color of the ceiling or wall to finish.
