I recently moved in with my grandmother, and my new desk needs a little TLC. It looks horrid with the curtains my grandmother was so kind as to make for my room. The curtains are a lovely antique gold/blood red. I have no clue what might look good as far as re-painting the desk, or whatever else anyone might suggest. The attached picture is one I took of the curtain material. The two blocks of different patterns repeat in a checkerboard throughout the material.

if the desk is a natural wood, you could stain it a nice cabernet or black cherry to compliment the colors, then coat with polyurethane to protect it. If it is painted or finished already, you can either try a deep gold or a deep red to paint it. Go to a paint store, pick out some color chips, take your time deciding. Painting is lots of work, so you want to make sure you really like the color(s) you choose. Above all have fun!
You could glue the same fabric onto the sides/drawer fronts of the desk which could be removed in future. OR buy a solid fabric color that's in the drapes and glue it to the desk. Paint is so permanent and difficult to remove if you ever leave your grandmother's home.
