My purse was feeling a little heavier than usual today. Instead of swiping my card first, I decided to toss all my coins from my purse at self-check out. I was shocked I had about $3 in miscellaneous change! I don't know why I didn't do this any sooner.
I am going to start bringing some change and toss it in the self-check out line when I shop at my grocery store. It is a win/win situation and coins are a valid method of payment so nothing to be embarrassed about. :)

I never use these self checkouts. I don't get paid to do it, it doesn't pay any income taxes, and they take jobs away from people who do.
Yes, that is absolutely true. I would rather not have to check myself out when possible, however time is precious too.
They have one or two checkers with very long lines versus I can either do it myself and be out much quicker.
I used to feel that way about self checkouts. Now I use them all the time because they are faster than waiting in line behind 4 people with full baskets and I can see on the screen in front of me exactly what I am being charged for my items. If something is wrong the employee in charge of that section can fix it right away without me having to stand in line at customer service later.
Sorry, but I like self checkouts. There is something to be said about them
1. You don't have to stand there while someone is counting out their $3.00 change.
Yes, they have them to save on labor costs but they are not going away. In fact more stores are adding more pods all the time, eventually that's all that will be there. A person will still be there but monitoring a certain amount of machines called pods and helping a few customers with checkout problems.
I used to not want to use them either for the same reasons as stated. Less checkout people also means merchants can keep their prices in check. This is particular true for Grocery and retailers like Walmart and Home depot, Lowes and Target I could go on.
I agree with all your pointers and do like the convenience of self check out. I do prefer to not have to check out myself if possible because that's what their jobs are for after all, but time is also precious so I am trying to get out of the store as soon as possible.
Like all you mentioned
Plus, sometimes ones who hold up the line because their kid, signifiant other, mom, dad, etc are still shopping yet they checked out
- I also had a lot of "I forgot my wallet" and they'd hold up the line.
- Changing of cashiers , re-loading money, etc.
- There are all sorts of scenarios that can happen when in line. I only stand in line if there is 1 or 2 people with less than a dozen items or so.
Choosing not to use self checkouts is a deliberate decision. All of the inconveniences you listed against using them are valid, but I still choose to deal with them rather than use self checkouts. Not only do self checkouts eliminate jobs, but they force the customer to "work" for nothing (ringing up and bagging their own purchases) after forking over good money for the merchandise. If enough people refuse to use the self checkouts, less jobs will be eliminated and I won't resent having to schlep my own purchases.
I often shop with a basket to reduce unnecessary purchases. When I shop with a cart, I tend to purchase more but that just works best for me now :)
Just today, I went to Vons (one location that does not have self check out yet) and they only placed two checker cashiers and each line had over 5 people with carts full. I only had 4 items and that is a scenario where I wish there was a self check out lane. Normally more checkers would be called but they weren't and some people just left their stuff and walked out.
While using self check out is our choice, I do not like being told to "use" self check out. Especially at the Post Office. I am always asked if I want to use the self service machine when I am up next or 2nd, I get upset and tell them, I can simply wait - it is ridiculous! Why not have the person be behind the cashier and work instead of just re-directing people to use the self service machine.
if i have something expensive im going to a checkout person for the insurance and the verification i didnt steal something..i purchased a tv from walmart one time never touched it they had an employee manage the transfer after payment in electronics it was on a cart the whole time again managed by the employee and still got stopped at the door that pisses me off..another time i purchased i think charcoal it was in the bottom of my cart and an employee tried to stop me i kept walking she called for assistance and i only parked like 3-4 parking spots away they just watched me..i hate walmart but they have what i need one stop shopping..i hate pod shopping too
I am sorry to hear those experiences you had to deal with! In my area, my Walmart is being like Costco where they will *sometimes* check your receipt even if you used a check out person or self check out. I do not often get stopped but it is usually just random customers, usually those who do not have bags and just push out their items as is or walk out as is (since I live in a state that charges for bags).
When I don't have a bag, I will walk with the item out and my receipt in hand - usually I do not get stopped or questioned. I always have my receipt right in hand.
thank you It is a great idea and I plan to do it.
You're welcome!
It costs you to use a self service coin counter, or you will receive a gift certificate on thermal receipt paper that fades. Sounds like a great way to get the full value of your loose change before it grows into a jar.
I let change accumulate from my husband and every so often, I'll take a bag of coins to Coinstar, but I get an Amazon ecard, which doesn't charge me anything. We constantly order off Amazon, so it's great for us.
is it ok to pay with coins at self check out
Yes, there is a place to put coins in most self checkout lines. It just takes a little longer.
you know what i would like? is if they gave you 5-10% off your groceries if you went to self check out. im doing my own scanning and bagging, so why not pay me in cheaper groceries for doing the job you should be doing.
At the self checkout, can I pay with some coins and the rest of the amount with credit card?
You can at the stores that I go to. You just put in the coins and it deducts them from your total due.
