Peeling Bark on a Madrone Tree - peeling bark on a madrone

Peeling Bark on a Madrone Tree - view of an area of the trunk with both newly exposed bark and the sloughing bark layer

Photo Description
To me, one of the most interesting and striking characteristics of madrone trees is the beautiful mahogany colored bark which crazes and then flakes off year round exposing the underlying green bark which will turn brown, then orangish, and finally this deep hue before it sloughs again.

I was sitting on the stairs in front of my house and looked up to see this stage in the recurring cycle and it cried out for me to take a couple of photos. Here they are.
