I've been going to my hairdresser for years, and she knows I have been wanting to do a perm for months now. I have showed her photos over the past few weeks of what we wanted to achieve and also what we did not. I reiterated several times that I wanted proper curls (not waves, since my hair is already somewhat wavy).
We finally did the process yesterday, which took about 3.5 hours! I didn't see many curls, mostly big waves once she was done, and the top part is pretty much straight. I had mentioned this to her, but she and another stylist mentioned it's because of the paste or product they have put into my hair. They mentioned I could wash my hair the next day (today), and then use some mousse and the curls would be more prominent and fluffy.
Unfortunately, my hair is all waves today. Not a single curl, and it just looks like my normal wavy hair, but messier, because of all the layering.
Should I ask her for a refund or can they do anything to fix it? I have been going to her for years, and have even brought my family and friends, but I am extremely disappointed with the result, especially because we thoroughly researched and discussed it together. I don't want to sounds fussy, but I feel like I was ripped off :( Thank you for your help!

Ask her to fix it or refund your money. The fact that you have been using her for years has nothing to do with this.
I had really long hair so naturally a perm never seemed curly enough due to the weight of my hair. Then I found a diffuser, which is a thing you put on the end of your blow dryer.
I would go back to speak to her about fixing your perm, or a refund.
Be honest and talk to the stylist about today and what is going on and ask what she can do to make it right. If she says nothing, and she is not the owner, talk to the owner. If the owner does not make it right, then I would not go back (which does nothing to fix your problem though).
If they will not make it right, you are going to need to be patient because re-perming your hair so soon can be really bad for your hair. Depending on your hair health, you may need to wait 3-4 months before trying again with a new stylist.
In the mean time if they can't make it right, look for creative ways to wear your hair to enhance the waves. There are lots of YouTube videos that give great style techniques or wavy hair dos. Maybe one or more will give you some good ideas.
I sure hope the stylist or owner is helpful and gives you a good solution. Post back with an update.
Thank you everyone for your inputs! :) I did eventually tell her how I felt, and she asked me to come back. She said the perm didn't set because of 2 reasons - 1) that she did a deep conditioning treatment before the perm, and she put too much of this treatment, so the curls didn't set. 2) because she was using something called "cold perm" and so the curls aren't supposed to be tight.
Eitherways, I told them to either help fix it or refund and she ended up fixing it. She mentioned because she did a cold perm, it will not damage my hair to re-perm (which I was extremely doubtful about!). But in the end, she helped re-perm, and it indeed did finally give me the curls!
Only downside was that she took out a lot of hair so the layers are messier, and with the curls, it does look messy when I leave it open. But eitherways, like you mentioned, I can try and style it accordingly, and wait till it grows out.
But next time, I would go to a different dresser for perms for sure. Thanks so much for all your help, really appreciate it :)
Good for you talking to her and kudos to the stylist for being honest and making it right!! We don't often get follow up so this is great to hear!
Be sure to take care of your hair since it has had a lot done in a short time!! I agree with you about finding someone else next time. Several years ago, when my stylist retired, I asked around to people who had cute hair styles to find someone...people probably thought I was crazy, but I figured if they did nice work for someone else, they would for me!
Blessings!!
If you are unhappy and disappointed with the results of your perm it is up to the shop to fix this issue and make it right. You should go and talk with her and let her know that what she did was not correct and did not work on your hair. it is not a good idea to perm your hair again so soon because this can really damage your hair.
Thanks so much everyone! It's been about 3 months now and the curls are mostly still there, but still messy with portions of hair getting back to my normal waves. Annoying part is I can't leave my hair open anymore, because it starts looking like a lion's mane within minutes. I'll probably be going to another hairdresser (who is really good) to do some treatment, and figure out some next steps to do with my hair. It's a handful to make it presentable enough for work everyday with the bad layering. Thank you all again for your inputs and Happy Holidays :)
Sounds like you are on the right track!! Thanks for the update! Take care and have a blessed holiday season to you and yours!!!
