Using leftover cross stitch fabric, you can make personalized bookmarks. I chose this ASL pattern symbol because my daughter recently graduated with her Associate Degree as an ASL interpreter.

Supplies:
embroidery floss
cross stitch pattern
leftover scraps of cross stitch fabric
needle
scissors
fabric for backing
Steps:
Choose a counted cross stitch pattern (from a book, the internet, etc.) and your choice of embroidery thread color(s) for the design.
Cut out a piece of cross stitch fabric to the desired size for the bookmark and large enough to fit your pattern. Complete the cross stitch design (this is the longest part of the project!). Place the cross stitch fabric on top of backing fabric and cut a piece of the same size with the exception of leaving the backing 1/2" longer at the top of the bookmark for making a hem.
With right sides together, sew around three sides of the fabric, leaving the small side at the top open for turning. Clip corners and turn. With the extension backing piece, fold down twice until it overlaps onto the cross stitch fabric. Pin together.

Sew across the top. I hand tacked, with thread, a small embellishment from an old necklace owned by my daughter. It says "Amore" because she loves ASL!
