I live in the Outback at a caravan park and it is expected that we are going to have snakes and I do not wish to harm them. I would be quite happy to keep them away with moth balls, but I have a small dog and I am wondering if she will eat the moth balls.

I don't think the dogs would. It's not something they would really have a taste/smell for.
I wouldn't take the chance of the dog possibly licking them or touching them with their paws and then licking their paws because moth balls are poisonous. It's also possible that if they are laying around that a child might get ahold of them.
I am sorry I don't have an answer as to what to try as a snake repellent :-(
I've always heard old car batteries keep snakes away (a fence of them, like). Don't know that for a face though. And the mothballs are probably NOT a good idea for animals and children alike (also the environment). Good luck!
I once bought spray repellent online from a man in Australia. What I discovered was that snakes or at least most snakes, are repelled by strong odors.
