I think it's the foot pedal, but the local repair service says it's not worth repairing and they won't take it apart. I don't know what to do since they are rather pricey to replace.

If you are game there are some diy sites. Without knowing the model I picked to more generic ones.
If you need to replace, eBay or Etsy may have one for less.

Go on eBay and try to get a new foot pedal. Its cheaper than getting a whole new machine.
I believe you need to establish that it is indeed the foot petal that is causing the problem before you invest in a new petal.
I did have someone working in the house who looked at the foot pedal and determined there was nothing wrong there. In further checking things out, however, he discovered one of the prongs in the machine that connects to the cord was quite loose and he felt that could cause a shortage.
