I'm looking for directions. A longtime ago I read of how to soak pine cones in a "solution" of Alum? And the pine cones would give off beautiful colors when burned. I'd appreciate some ideas Thanks.

It isn't a good idea to burn pine cones in a fireplace. They give off creosote, a sticky substance that will stick to the inside of your chimney and can cause chimney fires. (10/23/2004)

I don't want to disagree with the previous advice, but we have been using pine cones for years as many of our neighbors have for starters in our woodstoves. We use the stovepipe cleaning log every fall to clean the pipe. (12/10/2009)
