Definitely decorating it and dressing like pilgrims on one end but also like modern people. YOu could have a pilgrim outfit, but at some point during the float, rip all those clothes off and underneath you are dressed like in space suits.
or you could be in a horse and buggy but using a tablet and cellphone, thus really subverting the paradigm of time.
Have people in time-appropriate costumes in a circle around the float. Arrange them in order of time.
