My sister's guy friend was giving away a dog and he said it was a Pit Bull, but after talking to my boyfriend he does not think so. Either way I'm more than willing to keep the dog.

I raised AKC Boxers in the US 40+years, also did some breed rescue work and my cousin raised Staffies so I've seen pure and mixed - she doesn't look full American Staffordshire Terrier (proper name of pit bulls) as her snout and coat are too long. She looks as though she might have some Shepherd in her.
What she also looks, though, is in need of vet attention - those 'scratches' combined with her coat looks more like the start of mange or a flea dirt allergy - both conditions pretty much standard in mix dogs given up 'free to good home'.
Luckily her injuries or condition don't indicate she was used in dog fighting as a bait dog, but she does look traumatised in the picture you posted. It's a very good sign that she's extending herself to be petted but the lay-back of her ears and the expression in her eyes clearly indicate she's afraid.
Take her to the vet, I don't think she's been cared for well at all - how blessed she is to have become part of your loving family, it won't be long before her coat is silky and her mannerisms free of fear!
