I have two tables about 2 years old, both have varnish issues and I don't understand how this happened. On my dinner table, I left a plastic bag from a comforter that I bought sitting on top. Then I was out of town for a few weeks and came home to pull the plastic bags off only to have these huge marks in the varnish that I can't wipe away.
I tried mayo as in one suggestion and it didn't work. Any ideas because they look horrible :(

This happened to me last summer. The only thing I could do was take a fine sandpaper and revarnish it. The plastic actually melted into the varnish so it wouldn't come out.
You could try covering the table with a thick white cloth. Put a warm iron on the cloth. Hopefully the plastic will melt onto the cloth. Change the cloth frequently. Polish after.
Basically the only way to remove the plastic from the varnish is with a 220 grade sandpaper. You will need to gently sand the area. Afterwards you will need to apply a new coat of varnish to the table.
The plastic bag didn't stick to the table, it just left the impression.
Did you try the mayonnaise with ashes or baking soda? This is what is usually recommended.
Here are some suggestions I have heard about or read about and I have not tried them all so always use caution when dealing with something like this. But - if it looks like you are going to have to sand and revarnish then trying a couple of things might not be so bad.
Suggestions: 1) GooGone 2) Green Works all purpose cleaner (always work with the grain and not in circles) 3) Mayonnaise and baking soda 1/1
Do only a small area at a time - work with the grain - do not leave anything on the spot for very long before wiping off - have plenty of old rags available before you start
You could try scraping with a blade at an angle but you have to be very careful to not cut yourself or scratch the glass.
