Diamond Post Medal for All Time! 1,246 Posts This intriguing sculpture is made out of a bunch of equilateral triangles made from Popsicle sticks and hot glue. If you add LED lights or votives inside, it makes a fantastic lamp. The inspiration for this came from a set of polyhedral gamer's dice, which I think are so cool. Give this craft a try!
Total Time: 2 hours
Yield: 1 sculpture/lamp
Supplies:
- 60 Popsicle sticks
- hot glue gun with glue
- scotch tape
- tweezers
- LED lights (optional)
Steps:
- To make your first equilateral triangle, add a dot of hot glue to the end of 1 stick.
- Place another stick on top of that, then add a dab of glue on the top of the end of the new stick.
- Place a third stick on top, then glue the other side under the first stick.
- Hot glue dries fast, but you'll have enough time to adjust the sticks so they make a perfect triangle.
- To continue making the triangles in identical sizes and angles, use the first one to guide you in making the second by laying it on top.
- Make 20 of these equilateral triangles total.
- Take a pair of triangles and tape them together.
- Now do it again with another pair.
- Now slide one more triangle in at the top and tape it in to the other two.
- Flip it over so the tape pieces are facing downwards, and gently lift it up so the 2 open ends meet. Tape them together.
- Hot glue the very center of this dome formation, then hot glue the joints at the bottom.
- Now tape together 3 triangles side by side.
- Lift the dome you created and start taping the 3-pieces below it. Essentially, you'll be making a belt of horizontal triangles right under it to make the torso of this sculpture. Glue the joints in place.
- Tape together another 3 and tape it on next to the last 3, then glue the joints.
- Tape together 4 triangles. This will complete the torso.
- Add the 4 triangles segment onto the body, then glue the joints.
- Now that you've worked your way around, you have the main first dome and the belt of triangles below that create the torso. All we need now is another dome like we made in part one!
- Repeat steps 7 to 11 to make the bottom dome.
- Before you glue the bottom dome on for completion, take your tweezers and gently remove all the scotch tape from the insides.
- Glue on the bottom dome.
- You now have a beautiful 20 sided sculpture.
- I like placing mine on my light box. It shows off all the dimensions.
- You can also place an LED votive at the bottom.
- Stuffing it with LED fairy lights makes it look magical!
