I had some plaster of Paris and wanted to use it for a craft item. I found out that I could make my own porcelain looking flowers.
Total Time: 1 hour
Yield: 20
Supplies:
- Plaster of Paris
- water
- acrylic paint
- paint brush
- silk flowers and leaves
- wax paper
- spray varnish
- hot glue gun or other glue
Steps:
- Mix Plaster of Paris with water in a disposable container using a two to one ratio, adding a little more water to make it the consistency of a pancake batter. Stir to mix.
- Dip silk flowers, holding by the stem, into the plaster mixture and swirl until coated. Drip off excess. Repeat for leaves. Lay on wax paper to dry or if you have a long enough stem, you can place them upright on a piece of styrofoam to dry. Let dry 24 hours.
- With the leftover Plaster of Paris, I added colored paint and a few drops of essential oil. After mixing thoroughly, I poured it into some flower molds. These I let dry 24 hours before removing from mold. They could be used for sachets in a drawer or set out in a pretty container to make the room smell good.
- After the flowers and leaves have dried, I painted them with the acrylic paint. After the paint dried, about 30 minutes, I spray varnished them and allowed it to dry for 30 minutes to an hour.
- Using a hot glue gun, I glued them into an arrangement. For this project, I had some lightweight wooden circles and glued them onto that. You could also sprinkle glitter on the flowers after spraying them with varnish so the glitter will stick to the project. This is a Valentine ornament I made for a friend who decorates her Christmas tree for every holiday.
