This chest was given to me as a gift. The giver repainted it. If I read the serial number correctly, its dated 1954. It is in very nice condition. I see tho that it has the dangerous kind of lock on it, which I would have removed if I thought the value would be worth the change. Over all just curious. Thank you.

Vintage Lane cedar chests sell for around $100-$700 depending on the age, condition, and whether the hardware is original. Most are worth about $200-$400. To date a Lane cedar chest reverse the three pairs of numbers that comprise the 6-digit serial number.
Too bad it has been painted as this usually reduces the value.
Of course, that is not always the case as some people will buy these even if they have been redone but that usually depends on how well it was done. If an amateur did the painting then you could probably expect your chest to sell for less than $100.
But then again, your area will have a large bearing on the final value no matter the condition.
A chest is very heavy and shipping will be expensive so most likely it would need to be listed for sale as 'local pick up only'.
If your chest is really in excellent condition (no damage on top?) it could be listed for sale starting at $250 with local pick up and best offers considered.
As to the lock: you definitely should remove the old lock as it is very dangerous and easily replaced.
In many areas, it is against the law to sell it with the old lock and online sites will not let it be listed without the old lock removed.

Your Lane chest could be worth up to $250. I would leave the original lock on if I intended to sell it. If you want to keep it and safety is an issue, change it.
