We got a dog, a 9 month old mini Schnauzer and he is a good dog, but the previous owner did not have him house trained (potty). We are crate training him, but when I take him out, sometimes he will go, but a lot of times he won't. Then he'll come in to the house and within a few minutes he'll poop somewhere. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First put him on a regular feeding schedule, and take him out on a regular schedule, do not leave food down and limited water. Do not allow him to eat or drink within the hour before you put him in his crate. He will most likely need to be walked in order to do 'his business' it helps get things moving so to speak. Never, ever rub his nose in it or punish, praise to high heaven when ever he goes outside. (01/16/2011)
Being consistent is the key to training a pet. Keep taking him outdoors at intervals (a nine month pup is able to hold longer than a two month old), so note the time between urine releases and take dog out a couple minutes prior. The amount of fluid intake; the more frequently the pup should be taken outside. If you take a dog for a long walk, it will usually empty during the walk in both ways. (01/16/2011)

I agree consistency is the key. Tell him what you want him to do, use the same words every time, and walking him until he goes is an excellent idea. Once he understands that that is what you want him to do, it will be easier and soon he will want to go outside to go because that is where you give him praise for going. Good luck! (01/18/2011)
