I need a bottom full denture and had 8 teeth removed 3 weeks ago. My denturist said that my gums need to smooth out more before she can take an impression that will be satisfactory. What does she mean? Smooth on top of the gum, smooth at the front?

i think what that means is that now in your mouth you have 8 open holes, or sores, and that eventually your body's healing mechanisms will fill in those holes, or the gums will grow over the area, and it will all become smooth. Whereas now it's all these valleys where the teeth used to be.
I think it takes about a month for that to happen
It means you have to wait for your mouth to heal.
It sounds like she was describing the healing process for the entire gum structure. She or your oral surgeon or dentist should have given you explicit instructions for this healing period, like what to and not to eat, for example, and if you need to use a special rinse etc.
If you didn't get good directions, you may want to call back and ask. Sometimes it helps to have a second person listen to the conversation with you as 2 sets of ears are better than one.
It is critical to the process to follow the instructions exactly as given so you don't delay the healing and fitting process or G-d forbid, get an infection!
Sending up lots of healing wishes and prayers!
