When washing a plastic shower curtain, retard the formation of mildew by adding half a cup of table salt to the rinse water and allowing the curtain to soak for fifteen minutes. Drain washer and remove the curtain. There's no need to spin.
To prevent mildew be sure to spread the shower curtain open after taking a shower. If the shower curtain mildews at the bottom it's probably because it is allowed to rest against the bottom or side of the tub. Try to reposition the bar so that the curtain can hang loose and dry between uses.

If you buy one of the new cloth curtains, they can be thrown in the washer and hung back up. I wash mine at least every two weeks and leave the rings on it. They cost a little more but you will never have to mess with a plastic curtain again and these cloth ones last for years. I have two. One on the outside of the tub and one on the inside. They do not leak through.

I always make sure to cut the bottom edge off, where it has a hem. The hem collects moisture and it's almost impossible to keep it clean, even with bleach.
When you purchase a new shower curtain liner or plastic curtain, spray the bottom with vinegar and it will not get mold on it. I got this from a friend many years ago

I need ideas as to how I could successfully remove the black mould that collects at the bottom of a plastic shower curtain. Thanks.

I cut off the bottom edge hem with pinking shears. This allows all the water to drain quickly and it will be longer before mildew forms.
I toss mine in the washer with a couple of white towels and a cup of bleach. The towels rub on the shower curtain and help to clean it. Hope this helps.
I am bedeviled by mould on the shower curtain so I want to know a really good (cheap) product to help overcome that, or even better, some DIY thing that actually works for people?
Thx in advance.
Use shower cleaner with bleach sprayed on and wiped clean. Keep curtain closed/extended with no folds and leave space at the ends for air movement when not in use.
Wash every few weeks in the washing machine with a little diluted bleach along with your detergent unless your care tag says otherwise.
A vinyl shower curtain liner is easy to wipe down. It also is easier to treat for the mold. If you are using a fabric shower curtain, make sure to read the care tag before using bleach as a cleaner to be sure it is safe.
I always make sure to cut the bottom edge (which has a hem) off. The hem collects moisture and it's almost impossible to keep it clean, even with bleach. Cut the bottom right along the top of the hem. Don't worry, it won't fray since it's vinyl.
Many older homes can have problems with mold and mildew in the bathroom. Preventing it can be difficult because dealing with the excess moisture must be dealt with before any mold can be eradicated.

Bathroom shower curtains/liners are usually a source of mold and mildew.
I have a claw foot bathtub. We have to use shower curtain liners all the way around for showering. That's a lot of vinyl.
Black moldy stains are appearing near the bottom of my vinyl shower curtain. I tried to wash it off in the laundry machine once with bleach, but the stains were only pale, not gone.
