Gift cards to Target or otehr stores is a great way to give a first, second and thrid place prize. You can also look at giving out a bond in amount of 10, 20 or even 30 dollars that the student can put away for college. There are many students who use phones now to keep in contact with their parents. You might want to think about phone cases, back packs, or even school supplies s prizes for these students.
I think something that reflects his life and beliefs would be appropriate, not something material or money related.
Perhaps a small plant, or a rock with a quote of his engraved on it. Maybe even one of his books as the top prize.
In situations like this, it is important to be mindful of the person and have the gift related to the occasion...this way the gift is part of the experience, not just a "prize". That is just me...I look at things different than most...they are teens and they may hate it, but later they will look back and understand the significance of such a gift.
Trophies are cherished for a long time.
