I am always having problems with my Singer sewing machine's tension. I have checked everything, needles, etc. But even after many services it still drags the the fabric down and makes loose bottom stitches. It's a Singer heavy duty 1980s Pattern 17-24 machine with an auto tension. Does anyone have any ideas before I dump it and buy a new one?

Please check out this article on understanding the tension on your sewing machine. it appears that there are several things that could cause your problem. Take a look here and see if this help you to get it adjusted. From what I did read this could actually be a screw that is moving after the tension has been adjusted. In that case it would seem to me that the hole has been stripped otherwise it should stay secure. Here is the article. www.threadsmagazine.com/
Do you mean you have had it professionally cleaned and it was not set properly?
This is unusual as most vintage sewing machine repair shops do a good job.
It really sounds like you have something either 'loose' or something just not fitting correctly.
Your machine is from the 1980's but many forums will still help you with problems like this. You may have to give them a serial number or even a picture but many will try to help with problems.
You may also have to join a forum to be able to ask questions.
This one is the very best and I love all the information and classes available.

Thank you for taking the trouble to answer, I am very grateful and will certainly look at the sites you have both recommended.
Site I posted this the other day, I looked at the bobbin housing for myself and removed the cover to the mechanism. It was all very oily and dusty. Which I have now carefully cleaned. I slightly tightened the bottom tension, which seemed to be very loose and also I noticed the the bobbim casing was extremely looses, which again I tighten the tiny screws.
On first test the machine seems to be sewing lovely. Tension appears to be perfect. This machine has given me trouble ever since I bought it in the 80's having swapped it for a very good, extremely basic Toyota. Fingers crossed I have sorted it.
I will just add that it has had many services over the years and within a couple of projects the same problem always occurred. I've also found an acticle to say that this model was very unsatisfactory from the beginning. Explaining my exact problem.
Thanks again for your help.
