There are many local auto shops and recycling centers that will accept your used motor oil and oil filters so they can be properly recycled - refined, reconditioned or reprocessed. It is completely free to you. Do not toss into the trash can or recycle can at your home.

Good tip. Motor oil in the soil is not good for the environment. At our convenient center there is a barrel for collecting motor oil. The oil is recycled.
When my husband changes the oil in the lawn mowers, he puts it in a cleaned milk jug with a screw on top that I have saved for this purpose. He pours the oil into the barrel at the dump and then puts the jug in the trash container. The jug can't be recycled as it has had oil in it.
At our local auto part store - they have a recycling bin for just empty containers where you can toss in. If there is any oil left, we have to go inside and hand it to them.
