Protecting Hair from Sun Damage?

I have been going to the beach every week and my hair has lightened, but I put coconut oil on it. I was wondering if exposure to the sun would damage my dry curly hair and is it a good idea to add camomile tea or lemon juice to my hair and should I do anything before or after?

Lemon juice will lighten your hair, which is okay if that's your objective. But as a person with dry, curly hair, I will tell you: wear a hat! You can also wear a scarf, either alone or under your hat for a different look. Some lightening is inevitable but too much will leave you with frizz. Sadly, I am speaking from personal experience. And once the damage is done, it takes a long time to undo. Sun streaks are sexy! Sun damage is not.

Are you wanting to use lemon juice to lighten your hair? Lemon juice by itself usually does lighten hair but it can be drying so keep that in mind. Using coconut oil is good but there are several ways to keep your hair healthy and not dried out. My daughter has long auburn hair and she uses a leave in moisturizer when she is going to be in the sun and that seems to work for her.

Here are some links that have good suggestions because everything you do before the beach trip as well as into the following weeks has everything to do with your hair's healthy look and feel.

I would wear a nice sun hat and use an umbrella.

The coconut oil is good for your hair!

According to this article, we can even apply sunscreen directly to our hair! I learned something new.

Exposure to the actinic rays can and will cause permanent photochemical damage to the hair, the amount of damage corresponding directly to the amount of exposure. This damage is irreversible. There is no substitute for keeping the hair covered while in the Sun.

European hair is considered the most desirable in the world. Those women who sell their hair for the making of very expensive, hand knotted lace front wigs would never consider exposing their hair to the Sun at the beach.
