My daughter's Boston is 10 months old and crate trained. He has done really well for months, not going to the bathroom in the crate. This past week he has both urinated and defecated in the crate every day while she is gone at work. They have had a change in routine at home and it started right after her husband started working days. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get him to stop going in the crate?

Determining the cause of the dog's changes is the most important. You have already pinpointed the cause the dog is now using his crate for the toilet. Now you need to break him of this habit.
- You need to rehouse train and crate train your dog. The change in his everyday routine has been disrupted.
- Considering that both of you work now in the daytime the dog is kept in his crate. Therefore, before you leave for work you must make sure the dog goes to the bathroom outside.
- You need to take him for a long walk in the morning before putting him in his crate. Make sure he goes to the bathroom during his walk. More than once is better.
- He is still young and basically can only hold it for 3 to 4 hours at the most. He needs to go to the bathroom and nobody is home now to take him out. Therefore, he goes in his cage.
- If at all possible is there a person who can come by your home around 11 or 12 and take the dog out of his crate and walk him. He needs to be walked during the day so he can go to the bathroom.
- Dog's are rather clean animals and don't like to go to the bathroom, near the place they sleep. You have left your dog no choice but to use his crate for the toilet during the day.
- Is there room in the crate to put down a puppy pad? This would be the only other solution if nobody can come to your home and take your dog for a walk during the day.
- Is it necessary your dog stay in a crate during the day when you are at work? If not maybe you should allow the dog in a small area in your home while you are gone. Use a puppy pad for him to go to the toilet while you are at work.
