I take my 5 month old puppy outside just before I go to work in the mornings and check on him almost every hour. He seems to get the right idea on peeing outside, but not the poo. Between the time I leave for work and the time I check on him he has gone poo on the carpet. Is there something I could spray on the carpet to stop him from using it for his toilet? It is almost like he is getting even for me leaving!

Use an enzyme cleaner like Natures Miracle, which will remove all traces of scent. If you dont clean remove the scent, he will go back to the same spot over and over.
I honestly believe that dog's do not try to get even with us!! They are too loving to do that!! At 5 months old, your pup is still learning control.
First things first, is I would take him to the vet for a quick check up JUST to make sure there are no health conditions going on (like worms or a hernia or such)--my girlie had both when she was a pup and it was miserable with all kinds of pooping accidents!!
Also make sure he has all his shots and establish a good relationship with the vet!! If the vet gives a clean bill of health, then take the time to talk about crate training! It works!!!
It is time consuming and must be done in a strict schedule, but it works!! For some dogs it takes longer than others (my girl was 2 before we finally got the routine 100%, but she was unusual...most learn it FAST!)
Every vet has a different idea on the best method and best crate type. I can go through what we did, but every dog is different too so your vet can give you the best info for your pup breed and age.
Prayers for you and the pup!! Puppyhood can be challenging!!! Just be patient and take it easy!! Be calm around the pup too as they sense anxiety and it makes them anxious which leads to more accidents. CALM is good!!!
