Puppy Tested Positive for Parvo Showing No Symptoms?

I took my 4 week old puppy to the vet due to tapeworms as I noticed she was acting funny in the morning because she wonuldn't eat and I saw a few drops of diarrhea, small ones (she's a tiny mix Yorkie and weights a lb). She did vomit the day before, small ones, about 2-3 times throughout the day.

The vet tested her showing she has tapeworms and also round worms. My vet also wanted to test for parvo which came out positive. I didn't have the money to admit her to the hospital which would cost me 2k or so. So I took her home and they gave her saline through an IV, gave me antibiotics, dewormed her, and also gave me probiotics.

I went ahead and researched what I could do to help her with parvo because she was tested positive. For the past 3 days now I have been feeding her chicken and rice with Pedialyte mixed in. She eats it every time and I would feed her every 3-4 hours. I don't even need to force feed her. I give her amoxicillin twice a day, probiotic once a day, and Pepto Bismo twice a day to prevent her from either vomiting or having diarrhea. Her poop looks like soft serve texture, but no watery diarrhea, and she's peeing a lot. I put a lot of water into her food and mix with Pedialyte powder. Also every time she wakes up she is playing for 20-30 minutes running and biting her toys. Does this sound like my puppy have parvo? Could she have tested positive, but surpasses it without me knowing? Because I have never seen actual symptoms of parvo from her. If I take her to get tested for parvo again would it test positive or negative? I'm not sure how the parvo test works.

So you are saying that your puppy was 4 weeks old and only weighed 1 pound when you took her for her first trip to the vet and your little puppy was diagnosed with roundworms, hookworms and Parvo? I cannot believe this puppy had all those things and showed very little symptoms (?).

  • How long have you had this puppy? First thing I would ask is where is this puppy's mother? It seems to that a puppy should not be taken away from their mother at 3-4 weeks of age and what kind of environment did this puppy come from that she would be exposed to all these things?
  • Do you know if the mother or the father/siblings have all these things? Do they have Parvo or been exposed to Parvo?
  • All of these questions seem very important to me as these and the medications this small puppy is having to take are terrible for such a young puppy.
  • I do not mean that you should change anything you are doing (as long as you are following the vet's instructions), I am just saying, all of this at one pound and only 4-5 weeks old seems like a lot! Poor baby - glad she is doing well and on the road to recovery.

  • The reason I asked about the mother/father/siblings is because they should know what the vet says your puppy has so the owners can treat their dogs for all these things. Your 4 week old puppy had to have gotten all of these things from her mother/father and surroundings.
  • I have read that false/positive parvo tests do happen and since you will be needing to take your puppy back to the vet very soon, you might discuss this with them as she will be needing to go through deworming again as well as getting started on her regular first year shots/vaccinations (very important).
  • Talk with your vet about when she should return for a check-up and further medications.
  • If your puppy has or did have Parvo, you will need to do extensive cleaning inside and outside of your home so that any "visitors" will not be exposed to this very bad virus.

Cleanup after Parvo is very important. This link has information on how to do this.

Thanks for your message and concern :)! So the story about my puppy girl Kona is that me and my husband bought her off Craigslist in Dallas. The person who sold her to us basically scammed us saying she was a yorkiepoodle teacup 7 weeks, fake shot records, fake pictures of the parents and she stop responding to us. I ask her she needed to release the shot records to us in our names for us to continue on the vaccination..she was very responsive and told us the vet she took her puppies but after constantly texting her she stopped responding, thats when we just knew we were scammed. Also we met her up at a public location it wasnt at the person house but knowing kona has worms, ticks infestation and positive for parvo Im pretty sure her other dogs has them and living outside. I posted up warnings about the seller and ppl been responding to me that she breeds and sells them off at an early age. Her post been flagged several time and she repost her new puppies saying they are teacup at 7-9 weeks but no one can do anything about it because we dont know where her house location is in order spca to investigate.

Anyways when I got kona she was 2-3 weeks only 13oz she was the size of an iPhone plus. I took her back to the vet the second time after a week later and she was lb 8oz, the vet said shes about 4-6 weeks thats when I found out she was tested for parvo. I read about the false positive parvo during my research and thats very unlikely to actually happen. If she was tested positive then she had it but like everyone who had made a comment said she could had mild parvo and showed up positive. I did everything to the T what the vet told me to do and I also did further research on people who had experience in this situation. I cleaned my house right away after finding out she had parvo and Ive been cleaning my house once a week with bleach and her stuff. I dont take her outside into our yard due to her not having any vaccination I didnt want her getting fleas or even ending up having ticks again. I let her interact with ppl as much as possible to help her with her social skills as of now and Im just waiting to take her to get her vaccinated so she can interact with other pets.

She might have had a mild case. I would continue treatment until the vet tells you to stop.

Prayers for your pup and you!

I would follow any vet directions to a "T" and take the pup back to the vet if she gets at all worse. Parvo and worms are both totally treatable, but the vet knows the best methods.

If you need help with your bill, you can always ask them for help to pay via a sliding scale or reduced payments. Many vets will help if you explain your situation.

If you really need help, you could always set up a go fund me or like plea for help. Friends and family can be very generous if they know you are in need.

Good luck! Let us know how the pup is!

Thank you for your message! Its been 7 days and my puppy still doing really well. I still keep her hydrated as much as possible and feeding her every 4-5 hours after she wakes up from her nap. Shes still playing for a good 30 mins running around and very hyper. Ill be taking her back to another vet to check her parvo again.

It is possible you puppy had a mild case of parvo. Enough to show up on a blood test, but not enough to give her serious symptoms. It sounds like you have taken very good care of her and she is getting over it. Check back with your Vet to see when you should stop treating her.

Thanks for your message! Yes its been 7 days now but Im still monitoring her really closely just incase her symptoms started changing but shes still eating every 4-5 hours now and I put a lot of water into her food to keep her hydrated. Shes peeing a lot throughout the day and playing for 30 mins after her nap. Shes doing great right now I believe the worms are slowly dying. Planning to deworm her again in another week plus her first vaccination.

Update:

It has been two weeks now since I found out my puppy was tested positive for parvo, I took her to the vet recently to get her retested for parvo and shes parvo free :). She finally got her first vaccination...three more weeks she will be getting her second vaccination and heart worms preventatives.

Thank you for taking the time to post back as we love to hear success stories but it is for sure that without your loving constant care, this puppy would most likely have died. Too bad someone cannot find this person and stop them from doing such harm to innocent little puppies. Sometimes a report to Craigslist can get them removed.
