Re-dyeing Hair?

I have really dark, almost black, hair. I did an auburn box color and of course only the roots took. The next day I went and got color from Sally's for dark hair and did it with a 40 developer. The colors were magenta and red and the roots are really red, but the ends are still really dark. Should I re-dye just the ends tomorrow or just wait because I don't want to ruin my hair? lol

Your case is somewhat unusual. No one could properly advise you without seeing your hair. Even then, advising you might be difficult without more information from you. You have applied color twice to your hair. Applying color a third time will not solve any problems or correct any conditions.

The color you used on both occasions had both lifting and depositing actions. The lifting action is what I will address. Lifting is essentially bleaching. If you put a color on your hair that was lighter than your natural hair, you would not be able to see it unless the darker natural color/pigment was first lightened.

Normally, the hair ends are more porous than the mid shaft or 'roots'. This higher porosity causes the bleach to lighten the ends more quickly and to a somewhat lighter degree. The fact that this did not happen with you is what is unusual about your case.

There is something about your hair which needs to be corrected before any more color is applied. I'm guessing there is a coating on your hair that is preventing the color from developing on the ends. This coating could be residue from past chemical treatments, or it could be something as simple as deposits from hard water.

There are professional products which will remove these coatings. My advise to you is to see a color specialist. Discuss your 'hair history' with her/him. Only then will enough information be gained whereby an intelligent decision can be made as to correcting your color.
