I colored my hair myself to a deep reddish color and I don't like it. I waited a month and tried to go back to my natural color which is a light brown, but it didn't take. I want to try again, but not sure what color to use. I'd rather not strip it or go to a salon. Any ideas?

There are "toners or hair colorings" without peroxide, which would be gentler on your hair to start with. I know what you mean about the red sticking so well, tried that once.
Any color of brown you like, with an Ash before the name would help mute out the red since you want to go brown again.
Light Ash Brown, or Dark Ash Blonde which looks like a light brown might help too.
I know once or a couple of different times, I too wanted to avoid going to the salon for every reason to get mine straightened out, (the color) and I ended up buying so many different "colors" of dyes, that in the end, I wish I'd of just had someone fix it, instead of all the money and hours I 'tried'.
Red is a color that will stay in your hair. You cant dye over it. Go to a beauty school. It wont cost much and you will get it done right.
You can keep using anti-dandruff shampoo as a mild stripper
The only real problem with red hair dye is the fact that it is one of the hardest colors to use to get it right and one of the hardest colors to dye over. You might want to really consider going to a studio to have this done. You'll thank yourself in the end and it could save a lot of damage to your hair.
