My husband passed away in October. Is the IRS going to take my refund for the child support he's been back paying for his adult children?

If he was alive when the payments were made I would think not.
I do not believe this will happen as child support is not counted as income on your tax return. Here is a statement from an IRS site:
"If you receive child support, you don't include the amount in your taxable income. You also can't count child support as earned income to qualify you for the Earned Income Credit"
There should not be any difference in receiving back child support payments but I would advise you to seek free help in completing your tax return.
You can Google free IRS tax help with your zip code and there should be some local sites in your area (ignore all the online sites as you need to talk to someone in person).

Try to stay away from a place that charges to complete your taxes as these usually take a good chunk of your refund money.
