Receiving Social Security Survivor Benefits?

My son passed away at 25 years old. He was employed from the age of 16. What happens to all the Social Security that he paid? He never married and has no kids. Am I entitled to it as his parent?

For all questions pertaining to Social Security benefits it is always best to go to your local SSA so you will know you have the correct information.

  • A parent can draw benefits from a deceased child's work credits but there are certain qualifications that have to be met.
  • Here is the information from SS web site:
  • 1). The deceased child must have sufficient qualifying work credits - 40 credits - if your son only worked 9 years it is possible he did not have sufficient work credits. SS will check this when you apply.

  • 2). For a parent to be eligible for a benefit, the following must be true:
  • The parent is at least age 62;
  • The parent was receiving at least one-half of their support from the deceased worker at the time of death;
  • The parent has provided timely documents that prove the deceased worker was providing at least one-half of their support;
  • The parent is not entitled to a retirement insurance benefit equal to or exceeding the parents new benefit;
  • The parent is the natural parent of the deceased worker (or became the stepparent or adoptive parent before the deceased worker reached the age of 16)

Remember: rarely are two cases the same so you should visit SSA so you can file and find out the true facts for your situation.

If you were dependent on his income, you might be. Make an appointment with social security and bring all documentation

I am sorry to hear your son passed. For social security questions, it varies depending on case so you would have to contact them.

As for your son's other accounts like his bank, or stock (if he has any) there is a beneficiary and if he wrote your name you would be entitled to it.
