It should not. I would call social security and tell them about the name change. You will have to bring documentation to prove that.

I believe the reason you wish to change their last name may have to be considered as sometimes children (later in life) resent the change.
This can also be complicated for the children later in life as their birth certificate will have one name and they will be using another name (legal but complicated). Birth certificates are necessary for all sorts of things (school, passport, driver's license, marriage, etc.) which would require legal papers of name change along with the birth certificate.
Have you consulted an attorney about the name change?
This would have to be a done through the court and a judge would have to be given all of the facts/circumstances about why you wish to change their names. The judge would have to make the final decision and they may consider the ages of the children and if the children are still very young they may decide that you should wait until the children are old enough to have a say in whether they wish to retain their father's name.
If the judge approves of the name change (not adoption) then it may not affect the children's survivor benefits.
