I need a recipe for hamburger stew that doesn't have a lot of spices in it.

My sis in law served this hamburger dish to my brother on their first invite over dinner date. Hamburger, cooked and crumbled, not crisp, canned green beans, sliced potatoes, onions if desired, mushroom soup, season as desired. Make a bit soupy, cook in oven, covered with foil. OR leave out potatoes and make mashed potatoes to put on top for a shepherd's pie type dish, adding mixed veggies if desired. Helps to have ingredients heated a bit before combining. (09/05/2008)

I don't know if you call this stew or not, we call it soup. But I know a lot of Northerners call them stews. Anyway, this is what we make.
Brown the ground beef with onion and green peppers. Drain and put into a large pot...add the otehr ingredients and cook all day on low. Add salt and pepper to taste.
I hope this helps. Any questions just email me ucmelaffn @ Aol . com (09/05/2008)

When I was in Girl Scouts we made a concoction called "Campfire Stew with browned hamburger and vegetable soup. Its pretty bland, and you could add any other vegies you like. (09/05/2008)

Here is how I make Hamburger Stew
cook 1/2lb bag of pinto beans
cook 2 lbs hamburger in a skillet and drain.
In a seperate pot, cook cabbage, carrots, potatoes, onion. When vegetables are finished cooking, add the beans (don't drain off the liquid) hamburger, large can of tomato juice, and a can of tomatoes. I don't add salt, but do use pepper.

Got this from my MIL, have made it for DH, but have never tasted it myself. There was a note of "remember moms don't measure...it is a little of this, a pinch of that"
While preparing onions & hamburger, you can preboil water in a kettle. This will create less time to bring water to boil later when you add to pot.
Use 4 quart pan for soup.
Saute medium chopped onion in a little olive oil in 4-quart pan..
When soft, saute 1 pound hamburger with onions until hamburger no longer red.
Add (boiling) water to mixture. Bring to boil.
Add about 3/4 large bag of egg noodles or elbow macaroni, or combination of both, or whatever kind of pasta you want.
Cook until still a little hard (al dente). The noodles will continue to cook while resting in hot liquid.
This soup will turn into a stew rather than a soup upon preheating (gets real thick).
Never bring soup to a boil when reheating, because you will create mush.
If you use real lean hamburger, add 2-3 bouillon cubes to add taste.
Add a little oregano if you like an italian taste.
Right before serving (10 minutes for me) add a can of stewed tomatoes (09/06/2008)
