Recovery Time for a Dog with Parvo?

My dog is just 1.5 months old and he is suffering from parvovirus. We took him to the vet on Friday and we just got him on Thursday, so I thought it would be best that I should take him for the checkup. I took him on Friday, but doctor was not available. After that he was very active, he played with me like almost for almost 2-3 hours. The next day I took him to the doctor in the morning when I noticed that he was not eating. The doctor checked him and said that he might have gotten an infection so he gave him some antibiotics. Then we went back home.

He got so lethargic and wasn't eating anything then. I revisited the vet in the evening, where doctor had him on glucose and took some samples for the test. Today, in the morning, I got the results that he is suffering from parvovirus. This morning he was again given glucose and some injections to cure the virus and again in the evening.

He is not eating anything, but the glucose that has been provided. The best part is he is drinking water by himself, but he is getting weak and extremely lethargic. His stool has contained blood, but he has pooped only thrice with the blood. I am very worried about him. Will he be okay? Will he be able to survive and fight the virus? I know he is very small and due to the virus too he is getting weak, but I can't see him like this. Can you please at least tell me what will happen to him?

He is sleeping almost all the time. He just gets up to pee and poop sometimes and drink water then goes back to his bed. He is also having a cough and cold. For that we are providing him with a nebulizer. After that his coughing has been reduced and he has secreted a lot of mucus.

Do everything the Vet say to do . Watch him very carefully. If you need to, feed him by hand and also stay hydrated by feeding him liquids. This process takes a long time, along with different stages.

It could take 2 more weeks before you see a big improvement. Hang in there your fur baby needs you! If you have more doubt stay in touch with the Vet!

Parvo is dangerous and it seems to look bad before it looks better. I had 2 dogs that ended up wih Parvo and one of them was at the vet for over 10 days before he got better and I could bring him home. You may need to go back to the vet several times for more shots and check ups before you see signs of improvement.

I know they look weak and sleep a lot. But it sounds like the vet is taking good care of him. Just keep giving him the meds that the vet gave you and make sure he keeps drinking water.

Another important factor is to clean all surfaces, where your baby has been, with bleach. Keep his bedding clean and clean his feeding and water bowls sterilized.
Sending up prayers for a successful recovery!

One more thing! Add some plain canned pumpkin to his diet. My babies also love Greek Yogurt! Both are very soothing to their tummies.

Hi,

I am sorry your sweet baby is not feeling good. When the puppy has not thrown up for about four hours straight, then you can give him plain, unflavored pedialyte, mixed with water, to the amount of 1/4 cup every twenty minutes, if the dog is not throwing up.

While the puppy is in the throwing up and pooping liquid stage, I would also try give a few sips of water every few minutes, if possible.

The dog cannot eat during the active stages of parvo because it hurts and is very painful. The intestinal lining is damaged, during the active part of this virus, and this causes a lot of pain. No one likes to eat when they are feeling bad.

Give you sweet puppy lots of soft words and have him somewhere that you can watch him and talk to him when he is not sleeping. I would buy gloves and hand sanitizer and lots of paper towels and wipes. This is to keep the dog clean, because there will be a lot to clean up in the first few days.

It usually takes three days to develop symptoms of parvo, after exposure. The next three days, of throwing up and pooping, are the worst, for the dog.

Most dogs that have parvo, after three days, will be able to beat the virus. If they are not strong enough, they will die, within the first three days.

IV treatment and antibiotics don't always work. You can give you dog care at home.

The idea is to keep the dog alive through giving water. Once the virus runs it course, which it has to do, and the dog survives, he or she will be immune to the virus for several years, at least.

Prayers and best wishes, as your dog recovers from this virus.

Your pup is in the worst part of this disease. Parvo can take up to a month to run its course. You did the best thing possible by getting him to your Vet. Follow the Vets directions to the letter. If things change or you have questions call your Vet. Since you have been in for a visit he should be willing to take your calls.

Things do change with parvo so do not hesitate to call. It could save your puppies life. Your pup should improve a bit after a week or so. Then it will take a few more weeks for him to regain his strength.
