Recovery Time for a Puppy with Parvo?

On day 1 my six month old dog didn't eat or drink and was throwing up. Day 2 he had lots of bloody diarrhea would not eat or drink at all. He was throwing up after the vet put an IV in his neck which caused like a camel hump. On day 3 he was throwing up and there was lots of bloody diarrhea. He took his first drink of water which was like 20 licks. (Yes I counted). Does this mean he will live if he is drinking again?

If the dog has parvo and is this sick it will take a lot of time for your dog to recover. Bloody diarrhea is a very bad sign and means that your dog is rather sick. I had this happen to me. It took 10 days under vet care for the dog to recover and come home again. During this time the vet had an IV in the leg of my dog and was giving him shots. It did take time for the dog to drink again, but during this time the vet was giving him liquids so he did not dehydrate.

You need to follow what the vet is telling you and make sure you keep the dog hydrated all the time. Since he is drinking again this is a good sign. He still has a long road ahead of him for recovery. But if the bloody diarrhea has stopped he is on his way to recovery. Just continue to do what your vet tells you to do and if he seems to be getting worse get him back there immediately.

I visited my dog at the vets each day to see how he was doing. I think it took around 5 to 6 days before the blood stopped. I know he was there 10 days and would not allow me to take him home until he was no longer throwing up and had started to eat again. At first it was very depressing to see my dog just lay there and not even try to stand up or even move. He was very sick and I did get him to the vet on the second day. The first day I did not realize he was sick because he was still very active and he ate that night. The next morning he was not moving at all and hiding in my yard. I knew something was wrong and it was a Sunday. I had to call the vet at home to come to the office to take care of him. It sounds like the dog is on the way to recovery but it can change.

Just keep him hydrated like you are and don't worry so much about him eating right now. That will come in a few days. My vet did not force any food on my dog because he was too sick. When he did start to eat again it was pasta or rice at first and then some soft foods mixed in. This took like I said 10 days before I could bring him home and then at home he was still weak and it took around another week or so for him to get back to his old self. Do not feed them much at all at first just a 1/2 cup of food if he is a medium size dog and less if he is smaller. Just allow them to eat a very small amount at first and you can give him food 3 to 4 times a day depending on how he keeps it down.

Drinking is a good start. He is a puppy and therefore will take sometime to recover . This is your fur baby, and you will have to nurse him back to health, but please keep in mind it will be slow.

Follow all Vet's advice, and keep him hydrated as best as you can. When feeding, soft foods are preferred. He may not eat much for a while, and may sleep often until he gets stronger.
