When I gather my mail, I get home and while I'm sitting in my vehicle I go through all my mail. Junk mail and flyers are put in a pile. I throw everything in my recycling barrel and just take in the important stuff.

I do almost as you do, but I add one recycle step. I open all mail and remove the return envelope if it is blank on the back. These can be used as note paper for such things as a grocery list, notation of plans for the weekend, etc. and then recycled when you are finished with it.
